What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis:

  • is an altered state of mind;
  • arises from mental and physical relaxation;
  • frees the conscious mind from internal chatter
  • allows the subconscious mind to be receptive to helpful suggestions
  • engages the imagination.

All people drift in and out of hypnotic states, or trances, in daily life such as:

  • driving on a motorway where you feel like you have lost time and can’t remember how you got there or what you were thinking about or;
  • being totally absorbed in a book or film, so much so that when somebody speaks to you it makes you jump, because you are being awoken from an altered state.
What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is:

  • the use of hypnotic trance to achieve therapeutic change;
  • opening a direct communication channel with your subconscious;
  • helping you gain power over your mind and actions.

When you are in a hypnotic trance you use the same parts of your brain where you find:

  • dreams;
  • memories;
  • fantasies;
  • the forces in you that draw you subconsciously or automatically towards certain actions and deter you from other actions.

For a moment think about the power of memories and how you learn:

  • Some memories are so strong they create an immediate subconscious lesson - burning your hand on a cooker hob ensures you never even think of touching it again.
  • Other memories have an effect through repetition like learning how to change gear when driving.

The subconscious assumes what it learnt is helpful, unless or until it learns otherwise.

Hypnotherapy helps you train your subconscious to make the changes you have consciously chosen.

Change becomes easier as soon as the conscious and the subconscious are working in harmony

What happens during a session

At the start of your first session:

  • I will ask some questions about the reason you have come to see me and the changes you are seeking for yourself.

  • We will also discuss how you will know when you have achieved what you wanted from the sessions, the ways things will be different for you.

During the rest of your first session I will use a variety of techniques including:

  • hypnotherapy;
  • Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP);
  • brief solution focused therapy and
  • emotional freedom technique (EFT)

to help you make the changes.

In subsequent sessions we will:

  • discuss progress and
  • continue to use the techniques above to help you complete the desired changes.

And you may be surprised at how much fun the whole process is.

Who can be hypnotised?

Virtually anybody can be hypnotised.

  • Sometimes it happens more readily than other times.  It depends at the time on how willing you are to be hypnotised; your desire to achieve something from the hypnotherapy and your trust and confidence in me, the hypnotherapist.

  • When I first meet you I spend some time answering your questions and helping you feel calm, relaxed and in a perfect state to enjoy the hypnosis experience.
How deep does the trance need to be?

Research has shown that the therapeutic success of hypnosis is not dependant on the depth of trance.

  • In practice this means if somebody is not entirely sure if they have been hypnotised, or they just feel they have been relaxing, they can still experience therapeutic change.

  • There is a wide spectrum of trance experiences, all of which achieve sufficient changes in consciousness to allow subconscious receptivity to healing suggestions.

  • In any level of trance the peaceful mind accepts helpful suggestions and allows the imagination to create multi-sensory or dreamlike experiences of change, which are subsequently integrated into conscious experience.
Is it ok to bring a friend?

Yes, it’s your choice.

  • When you first meet me, at the free initial consultation, you may be surprised how quickly you feel comfortable and relaxed.

  • My approach to hypnotherapy is very flexible. I develop each programme of treatments to fit your needs, so I am very happy for you to bring a friend if you would like their support.
Does hypnosis involve loss of control

No.

  • You always remain in full control of the situation, no matter how deeply you enter trance.

  • You are fully able to make any choices, to speak, to say nothing, to stand up, to finish the session or to go even deeper into trance.

  • Your subconscious is excellent at taking care of you, just like the way you would wake up at night if you heard a disturbance in your home or if a loved one called out to you. In this way you are able to be completely relaxed and fully enjoy the benefits of the trance knowing you could awaken if you needed to.
Does hypnotherapy work?
  • If you are motivated to make a change you have already made the most important step towards success in treatment.

  • Bring a definite idea of what you want from hypnotherapy to the sessions and then, during hypnosis, enjoy training your subconscious to rehearse your new future.

  • So yes, for many people, hypnotherapy works.

  • Don’t just take my word for it. There are countless testimonials, on the internet and on this website, of people who have achieved success in their chosen goal following hypnotherapy treatment.
Is it easy to come out of hypnosis?
  • In our daily living we dip in and out of trance states all day, without really noticing most of the time. Therefore it is natural for us to come out of a hypnotic trance, even without guidance, after forty minutes or so.

  • Likewise if something needed your attention in the middle of a hypnosis session you would easily return to full consciousness within seconds.You could also return to trance as soon as you wanted to.

How many sessions are needed?

Each client is unique.

  • You tell me what you need during the free initial consultation. Then I suggest a suitable programme of coaching or treatment based on the information you have given.
  • My stopping smoking programme involves three sessions.
  • Most other treatments such as phobias, anxiety and confidence involve three or four sessions.
  • On some occasions you may find it helpful to have as many as six sessions.
  • Sometimes, especially with some NLP coaching, I can only judge the likely speed of progress when we have actually started the work. I will tell you this before booking the sessions, if I think this applies to you.
How long is a session?
  • Most sessions are 50 minutes to one hour including an initial discussion, hypnosis, NLP and/or EFT and feedback at the end of the session.

  • Sometimes I suggest sessions of 1.5 hours or two hours if the issues are more complicated or for NLP coaching.

  • I also provide a three hour "mega session" which can be very beneficial for a variety of issues including some phobias.

  • The stop smoking programme involves a 45 minute preparation session, 90 minute stop day session and a 60 minute final session.
