What is hypnosis

Hypnosis is an altered state of mind arising from mental and physical relaxation during which the conscious mind is free from internal chatter and the subconscious mind is particularly receptive to helpful suggestions and willing to engage the imagination.

All people drift in and out of hypnotic states, or trances, in daily living, e.g. those occasions driving on a motorway where you feel like you have lost time and can’t remember how you got there or what you were thinking about.  Another example is being totally absorbed in a book or film, so much so that when somebody speaks to you it makes you jump, because you are being awoken from an altered state.
